Musical Conversations

This year’s creative schools project ‘Musical Conversations’, was inspired by Robert Schumann’s description of chamber music as ‘a beautiful conversation between four people’.

The project was led by animateur Sam Glazer and delivered in collaboration with Theatr Brycheiniog and Theatr Hafren and with primary schools in the Brecon and Newtown and Welshpool areas – Cradoc, Sennybridge, Berriew, Leighton and Abermule. Each school spent a day working with Sam and MWCO musicians, listening, singing and creating their own new musical conversations. For the pupils from Cradoc and Sennybridge these were based around the local legend of the Lady of the Lake. The north Powys children had come up with different themes, including a conversation between Hitler and Churchill. The north and south Powys projects each ended with an interactive concert where the school groups came together to perform their new songs to pupils and parents; the musicians also performed works by Borodin, Webern, Lennox Berkeley and Shostakovich. Feedback from children, teachers and musicians has been overwhelming:

'I wish we could do this every day.'  South Powys pupil

  '
It was amazing and I really want to do it again!.'  North Powys pupil

' I cannot think what you could do better except please offer more of the same.'  Teacher

For all of us the project was hugely rewarding and we're now developing new projects with Theatr Brycheiniog and Theatr Hafren for 2012. Watch this space!

We are very grateful to the following for their support of Music Conversations: The Community Foundation in Wales, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Gibbs Charitable Trust, Powys Community Endowment Fund, Linbury Trust, Theatr Brycheiniog, Theatr Hafren.
